My Goal For The House That Lalli Built
Hi! I’m Allison. Welcome to The House That Lalli Built! My goal for this site is to share my knowledge of working with struggling readers and writers. I have spent quite a few years working with elementary students with a range of reading struggles and have picked up tips and tricks along the way. My hope is that this knowledge can help you in the classroom or at home so that all readers can read successfully.
I have also read and used many children’s books in the classroom, tutoring, and at home. My plan is to provide children’s book titles to my readers. Not only that, but how best to use these titles when teaching and modeling strategies and skills with children.
I prefer a side profile shot to forward facing;)
My professional background
I have a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s in Reading Education. I am a Reading Specialist with training in Reading Recovery. Reading Recovery is an intense tutoring program for struggling first grade readers.
About My Blog
As I mentioned above, I started this blog as a way to continue to help teachers and parents. Often I am asked literacy questions so I thought it might be nice to write these answers down. I also wanted to offer book ideas for teaching and reading as I am also often asked about book ideas for kids.
I love to learn and what better way to learn than to start something new?! This way I get to pair my desire to help others with my desire to learn new things and everybody wins!!!
I hope you enjoy this blog and please don’t hesitate to contact me with any content you wish to see, such as book lists or questions about literacy.
A Little Background on Me
Becoming A Teacher
I come from a family of teachers, but my dad’s mom is the one that influenced me to become one. She was quite the storyteller and used to tell me stories about her days in the classroom.
A friend of mine and I would play school all the time. We would make worksheets and report cards. We would dress like whichever teacher we had that year. Naturally we both became teachers, but our dream of working together never came to fruition (she is high school and I am elementary).
My Friends Would Say…
I am super opinionated and not afraid to share it.
I can’t hide my feelings. No matter how hard I try, you will know how I feel.
I am OCD about organizing and visual appeal, but not a perfectionist when it comes to minute details. I’d rather get something done on time (cross it off my todo list!) than ensure it is perfect in every way.
I am the most self-conscious confident person you will ever meet.
I am happier with a small group of friends rather than attending a party.
Subject: American History
Song: Ever Changing, but I love Queen and that won’t change
Book: Harry Potter series and The Pillars of the Earth
Movie: Beauty and the Beast
Food: appetizers and fondue
Hobbies: reading and pinning things I will never do
City: Washington D.C. and London (but Rome is pretty cool too)
Famous Doppleganger: In my youth I was told I looked like Christina Applegate
Beach or mountains: Beach. I am an equal opportunity beacher. I know some are VERY passionate about their beach, but I didn’t really grow up with A beach so I will go to ALMOST any and be happy. There are two I hate, but they shall remain nameless.
Pencil or pen: Pencil, Ticonderoga to be exact. I like to erase.
Vanilla or chocolate: um, vanilla chocolate swirl with rainbow sprinkles in a waffle cone (I’m not opinionated)
Cubed or crushed ice: the ice you get when you’re in labor, so crushed?
Listener or talker: bahahaha…I think we know the answer at this point (talker).
Flats or Heels: closed toed flats. I hate when my feet get dirty and my toes get cold.
Wine or Beer: I may have mentioned this once or twice on the blog, but my choice is wine.
Movie theatre or Home: tough one. I love the new lounger and dining theatres, but I think I pick home. The hubs makes good popcorn and it’s far cheaper. Does anyone else notice the turn around is faster nowadays? I remember it taking 6 months to a year when I was younger!
Early bird or night owl: early bird! I love the early morning quiet before my kids wake up.

About My Family
We pretty much never get a good shot, but I love it.
The hubs hates pictures of himself.
We have three kids; two boys (Diesel and Rocket) and a girl (Peanut). They keep us on our toes. Most days you can find my boys in a tree or climbing rocks. The Peanut can hold her own. She will see the boys wrestling and she will politely jump in. At the same time she has a love for shoes and purses. We also have an awesome goldendoodle, Max. We lucked out with him as he has had to endure a lot of handling by the kiddos. He is the neighborhood dog as all the kids know him and ask for him often. And he loves the attention.
They’re always this angelic:)
Max being used as a pillow.
As a family we love to have fun (which family doesn’t?). We like to get outside and explore (listening walks and nature hikes are just some of our adventures). We frequent playgrounds and love to picnic (mainly to avoid the mealtime mess in my house). Despite the massive amount of laundry I have to do afterwards, we love to get away for long weekends.
